Asbestos Air Monitoring and Fibre Counting

The fibre counting method provides an estimation of airborne fibres that is a quick indicator of whether an area is safe.

Air monitoring is a requirement for Class A asbestos removal and recommended for other asbestos removals. It can also be helpful in cases where known or presumed asbestos materials have been damaged or worked on, where asbestos-contaminated dust has been found or when structures have been destroyed by fires.

In addition to our main lab, we have fibre counting labs in Wellington and Christchurch that allow us to provide quick results.

By law, air monitoring must be done during Class A asbestos removal work.

Depending on the judgment of the asbestos assessor, air monitoring may be done:

  • Prior to Class A asbestos removal work
  • During Class B asbestos removal work (especially if work is next to a public location)
  • If it is not clear control measures are effective
  • There is evidence control measures have deteriorated
  • There has been an uncontrolled disturbance of asbestos at the workplace (e.g. asbestos-contaminated dust has been blown around)
