Asbestos in the home
Asbestos is the number one workplace killer in New Zealand, with over one hundred cases reported each year.
If you or someone you know is planning work on your home, it is as good time to consider the presence of asbestos. Houses built, or that have had work done, before 2000 are more likely to contain asbestos or asbestos-containing materials (ACM).
If the work involves removal of asbestos, ask to see the contractor’s asbestos removal license before agreeing to have asbestos removal work done. This shows that the contractor is trained in how to work with asbestos safely.
Licenses are not required for maintenance and servicing work on asbestos or asbestos-containing materials, but the people undertaking the work must be trained in how to work with asbestos safely.
